Shakespeare in the Park - September

by Naomi

For over 45 years, the New York Public Theater has been bringing the Bard’s classics to the general public in the form of ‘Shakespeare in the Park’. Every summer, over 80,000 visitors and locals alike are offered the opportunity to see some of the best productions in town - at no charge whatsoever. Over the years, some of the industry’s greatest actors and directors have been part of Shakespeare in the Park, including Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman and Jeff Goldblum. Eight million people in total have watched innumerable shows since the event was first introduced to New York’s rich cultural scene in 1964.

This summer, Shakespeare in the Park offered two of the most popular classics - ??Romeo and Juliet?? - which ran in June and July and ??Midsummer Night’s Dream?? which is running in August and until the 8th of September, 2007. ??Midsummer Night’s Dream?? is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, telling the story of four lovers who run from Athens and find themselves in a magical bind following a dramatic fight between the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon and Tatiana. Directed by Daniel Sullivan, this production will run from Tuesdays through to Sundays at 8 pm at the famous Delacorte Theater. With a cast of nearly 30 actors, this show promises to live up the excellent standard of previous productions of Shakespeare in the Park.

September in New York City

by Samantha

If visitors are looking for a good time to visit New York City, September might be the perfect month to do so. This is the time when the summer visitor crowds have thinned out significantly and children have returned to school. This means that visitors will be free to discover New York without having to battle their way through to see popular destinations. In addition, September is still early enough in the fall to avoid paying the steep prices for hotel rooms that come with the peak travel season.

While most local New Yorkers escape from the city during the summer months to avoid the heat and humidity, September brings with it a coolness that makes it quite pleasant. True, subways and streets may still be uncomfortable in the lingering summer heat, but it is usually pleasant enough to enjoy a walking tour and most evenings are cool enough to even require a jacket. Average highs in September are 76 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), with average lows being 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius).

It is still essential to remember to pack an umbrella for sudden summer showers, as well as a waterproof jacket or sweater for cooler nights in NYC. While most summer activities have ended by now, it is still recommended to pack a waterproof blanket to enjoy sitting on the grass in the parks with a picnic basket in the evenings. As far as foot attire goes, it is probably best to pack good walking shoes, preferably closed and waterproof, for some serious pavement pounding.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

by Samantha

The construction of one of New York’s greatest landmarks, Brooklyn Bridge, began in 1870. It was the dream child of the architect John Roebling who proposed that the construction be a suspension bridge. Unfortunately, Roebling died before the bridge was completed in May 1883, although his son (who also fell ill during this time) and daughter-in-law helped bring the project to completion. Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is considered one of the greatest architectural feats of the nineteenth century and has been declared a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Although most people drive across Brooklyn Bridge to get from one side of the city to the other, many actually prefer walking or biking as way of truly appreciating this magnificent construction and getting a wonderful view of New York. A walkway in the center of the bridge accommodates pedestrians and bikers, however separate lanes are set up to avoid accidents. Walking the bridge is a wonderful way to see New Yorkers of all shapes and sizes, from different cultural backgrounds, going about their lives.

Large square planks at the base of each of the legendary arches on the bridge recount the history of its construction. Along the way, visitors can also read about the history of New York’s different boroughs and compare the sights they see from the bridge today with those that they would have experienced in 1883. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge does not begin immediately at the water’s edge. The bridge begins a long time before in actually spans the water and visitors can enter near City Hall if they are coming from Manhattan or near the Federal Court if they are in Brooklyn.

To truly experience the wonderful views of New York and to soak up some authentic local atmosphere, walking the Brooklyn Bridge is an absolute must for visitors to the Big Apple.

The Diverse and Vibrant Neighborhood of Harlem

by Daniel

Harlem is probably the most famous neighborhood in the world, having been portrayed in a wide variety of popular films and books through the years. However, Harlem as we know it today was significantly different to the Dutch borough of Nieuw Haarlem that was formalized in 1658. From the seventeenth until the nineteenth centuries, Harlem was synonymous with genteel country living, less than one hundred families and vast estates. By the late nineteenth century, however, Harlem’s soil was not yielding good crops and the farmlands were taken over by Irish squatters. In 1880, the city began a project of construction in the area and apartments, townhouses and tenements started to take over the landscape.

Harlem has experienced waves of immigration through the years. It was home to East European Jews, Italians and also a significant Irish population. However, the main population group in the area is its African-American inhabitants. Accommodation options were the main reason that this group of people quickly made Harlem its home, although this also led to the corruption of rent prices and ??ghettoization’. The neighborhood declined as high rental prices led to population density, which in turn led to crime and other social ills.

For years, the City of New York attempted to turn the image of Harlem around and finally in the 1990s, after years of false starts, the revitalization of this borough began. Tough crime fighting units steadily brought gang fighting and drug dealings down by impressive figures and the city has funneled money into new developments across the area. As a result, richer New Yorkers from other locations have moved into Harlem, pushing up property values and increasing the construction of housing units.

Harlem was home to many cultural and political events throughout its history, including the Harlem Renaissance and actions linked to the Civil Rights Movement. Today, the annual Harlem Week festival in August attracts millions who come to celebrate the rich diversity and vibrancy of this neighborhood.
